Addition and Subtraction of Time - Elementary Math Tutoring Guide

Understand addition and subtraction of time step by step with free lessons that are simple and clear

Addition and Subtraction of Time: An Elementary Math Foundation for Daily Life

Addition and subtraction of time is another essential skill that children must learn early in their elementary math studies. We use it in daily planning and time management, such as calculating how many minutes it takes to travel to school, how many hours remain before an appointment, or how many minutes are left until lunchtime. Understanding this topic helps students build confidence in elementary math.

Before being able to add or subtract time correctly, it is necessary to first understand the units of time, such as:

  • 1 week = 7 days
  • 1 day = 24 hours
  • 1 hour = 60 minutes
  • 1 minute = 60 seconds

Once these units are understood, we can add or subtract time within the same units, such as combining the time spent on activities or finding out how many minutes/hours separate two events. Practicing this is a form of elementary math exercises that helps children develop both analytical thinking and time management skills 💡

Steps for Adding Time

When adding time, write it separately as hours – minutes – seconds in a table. Arrange the smallest unit on the right and prepare a space above for carrying over.

  1. Start adding from the smallest unit on the right (e.g., seconds → minutes → hours).
  2. If the sum exceeds the full unit, “carry over” to the next unit:
    • 60 seconds $=$ 1 minute (carry to minutes)
    • 60 minutes $=$ 1 hour (carry to hours)
    • 24 hours $=$ 1 day (carry to days)
  3. Write the remainder in the same place and continue adding the next unit until complete.

Example 1

Find 1 hour 30 minutes $+$ 45 minutes

Steps for Subtracting Time

Subtracting time is similar to addition. Write the values separately as hours – minutes – seconds in a table, placing the smallest unit on the right and prepare a space above for “borrowing”.

  1. Start subtracting from the smallest unit on the right (e.g., seconds → minutes → hours).
  2. If there is not enough to subtract, you must “borrow” from the larger unit, for example:
    • Borrow 1 minute = 60 seconds
    • Borrow 1 hour = 60 minutes
    • Borrow 1 day = 24 hours
  3. After borrowing, add the value to the smaller unit and continue subtracting as usual.
  4. Write the remainder in the same place, then move on to subtract the next unit until finished.

Example 2

Find 2 days 3 hours $-$ 15 hours

Summary of Adding and Subtracting Time: A Basic Skill that Makes Elementary Math Easier

Adding and subtracting time not only helps children calculate correctly, but also trains them to think analytically, organize events in order, and manage their time effectively ✨. Children who understand this concept will be able to plan their studies, activities, and daily life more efficiently.
